What this site knows about you

Short version: no accounts, no advertising, no analytics, and nothing sold or shared. The only thing stored about you is what is needed to stop the resident poll being stuffed.

No accounts and no tracking

There is no sign-up, no login and no newsletter. The site loads no advertising, no analytics and no third-party tracking scripts of any kind — not Google Analytics, not a privacy-friendly alternative, none.

The resident poll

Answering a poll question sets one first-party cookie, sg_v, holding a random identifier and nothing else. It lasts two years, is HttpOnly and SameSite=Lax, and exists so that changing your mind on a question replaces your answer instead of adding a second vote. It is not read anywhere else on the site, and it says nothing about who you are.

Your IP address is never stored. It is combined with a secret and hashed, and only the hash is kept, so that one network cannot create unlimited new respondents for a place in a day. The hash cannot be turned back into an address.

Your answers themselves are stored without anything identifying: a place, a question number, yes or no, and a date.

Photographs load from Wikimedia

Place photographs are served directly by Wikimedia Commons rather than copied here, so displaying one means your browser requests a file from upload.wikimedia.org and Wikimedia's servers see that request in the ordinary way any website request is seen.

Hosting

The site runs on Cloudflare Workers. Cloudflare handles the connection and keeps operational logs, as any host does. We do not add our own logging of visitors on top of that.

The data about places

Everything the site publishes about a town comes from public datasets — the Census, the Department of Education, OpenStreetMap and state revenue departments — listed with their licences and as-of dates on the methodology page. None of it is personal data about residents.

Removing your answers

Clearing the cookie ends the link between you and your answers, and there is then no way for anyone — including us — to find them again. If you want a specific set of answers deleted before you clear it, get in touch at privacy@suburbgrade.com.
